Dear Reader,
A study has just been published that shows a worrying increase in falsified studies – written not by "real" authors, but with the help of AI. We don't want to call for this, but we also wanted to test what AI is already capable of today: We took the easy way out today. We asked ChatGPT to write us an editorial on the topic of Girls’ Day, while also discussing the role of women in science in general and at the BIH in particular. You can see the results below – and we look forward to hearing what you think!
With best wishes, Christopher Baum and Mike Frieser

Dear Readers,
In this issue of the newsletter we would like to highlight the importance of Girls Day and the important role of women in science, especially at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH).
Girls Day is a great initiative that allows girls and young women to get a taste of professional fields that are traditionally dominated by men, such as technology and science. Girls Day is designed to encourage girls to pursue their interests in these fields and show them that they can be just as talented and successful as their male counterparts.
However, there is still much to be done to achieve gender equality in science. Women are often underrepresented in science and often have difficulty obtaining career opportunities and being promoted. However, the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) has set itself the goal of addressing these challenges and specifically promoting women in science.
The BIH has established a number of programs to support women in science and improve their career opportunities. One of these programs is the BIH Female Career Advancement Program, which provides targeted support and advancement for women in science through coaching, mentoring, and training opportunities. In addition, the BIH recognizes the importance of women’s visibility in science and honors outstanding achievements by presenting the annual BIH Excellence Award to outstanding female researchers and scientists.
The BIH demonstrates that the advancement of women in science is essential and worth investing in. By promoting women in science, we can ensure that all talents are utilized and that science reflects the diversity and richness of ideas and perspectives.
We encourage all readers to support Girls Day and the advancement of women in science. Together, we can help create a world where gender equality in science becomes a reality.
Warm regards, Your Newsletter Team

The tenth spin-off of the BIH Digital Health Accelerator pinpoints the best time to exercise, sleep and take medicine: An interdisciplinary team led by Prof. Angela Relógio, a scientist at Charité’s Molecular Cancer Research Center (MKFZ) and Institute for Theoretical Biology and the MSH Medical School Hamburg, has developed a non-invasive method for profiling a person’s unique circadian rhythm. Starting with a simple saliva sample, the team of experts can create a detailed description of the body’s internal clock by combining molecular analysis and computational modeling. People around the world have been infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus for more than three years. It quickly became apparent that killer T cells play a crucial role in fighting the virus in the body by killing off infected cells. However, it was not entirely clear how the immune system manages to activate the defenses in a targeted manner and then calm them down again once the job is done. An international team, including scientists from the BIH and the Charité, has now come a decisive step closer to understanding this phenomenon. The researchers have published their findings in the current issue of the journal Nature Immunology. Read moreRead the publication

Girl's Day at the BIH 2023
For this year's Girls' Day on April 27, 2023, we welcomed 65 girls at six different research sites. At the workshop "Discover DNA with us", we were pleased to welcome fState Secretary Judith Pirscher from the BMBF, who worked with the schoolgirls to extract DNA from strawberries under the expert guidance of Professor Kirsten Kübler and her team. The five other workshops also offered the girls interesting insights into the world of science. We would like to thank all the colleagues who opened their doors to interested schoolgirls and gave them an impression of their work for a morning. Read more (in German only)

Finding alternative methods to animal testing is the goal of many researchers in biomedicine. However, implementing the 3R principle "Replace - Reduce - Refine" often requires additional resources. Assistance in finding such resources is provided by the newly launched "3R funding programs" website. The site lists current funding lines for projects seeking to support the 3Rs principle in biomedical research. It includes award calls and funding opportunities for research in Germany, but also includes international calls. To the new website "3R funding programs"
