On the evening of February 20, the Julius Wolff Institute, also known as the BIH Center for Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Regeneration, marked the opening of its new research facilities at the Rahel Hirsch Center for Translational Medicine (RHC) with a festive ceremony. At this inaugural event, the Institute and the RHC highlighted their deep historical ties to their namesakes – Dr. Julius Wolff and Prof. Rahel Hirsch, two pioneers in medicine who, at least symbolically, are finally coming together in this hub for translational research. Margot Friedländer and Dr. Katherine Wolff brought the ceremony to life with their inspiring words, painting a powerful picture of the connection between science and humanity. “Science should serve humanity,” Friedländer said – a core belief that drives both the Julius Wolff Institute and the entire BIH. The standardized key points for spin-offs increase transparency, planning security, and bindingness, thereby accelerating negotiations in spin-offs and ensuring fair participation in possible success. This allows medical solutions to be brought to market faster to maximize patient benefit.

"Women – Leading – Science"
As part of the Berlin University Alliance (BUA), the Berlin Leadership Academy (BLA) program “Women – Leading – Science: Successful Female Leadership in Science Management” was held for the first time with the participation of the BIH Biomedical Innovation Academy (BIA). Female department heads from FU, HU, TU and Charité dealt with leadership behavior, power relations and role conflicts as well as confident appearance. At a BLA networking event with special guests the participants discussed leadership patterns, career steps and personal branding. The third round of the program will start in June 2025. On February 28, 2025, Peter Gruss was our guest and dedicated his lecture to the “remarkable moment in healthcare” in which groundbreaking technologies are revolutionizing our understanding of ageing and longevity. The cell and microbiologist showed how technological innovations are driving this revolution and how their integration is changing our ability to diagnose, treat and prevent major health problems. He looked at specific tools and methods that are making personalized medicine and regenerative therapies not only possible, but increasingly viable for widespread application. To mark this major step, the team honored its historical connection with Dr. Julius Wolff, the person after whom the institute was named, and Prof. Dr. Rahel Hirsch. Two personalities who made pioneering contributions to medicine and now meet – at least symbolically – in this center of translational research. We offer funding & mentoring for translational projects from all medical disciplines for the development of therapies & preventives (such as small molecules, drug repurposing, ATMPs, vaccines, biologicals), medical devices and diagnostics. BIH and Charité Scientists as well as Clinicians at all career levels are invited to submit translational project applications until July 7, 2025 (14:00 CET).

Second Call for Internationalization Grants
Together with Stiftung Charité, the BIH Biomedical Innovation Academy (BIA) will publish the second call for applications for the Internationalization Grants. The aim of the Internationalization Grants of up to €5.000 each is to intensify international cooperation and to work together on joint projects “side by side” – either outbound: scientist in the partner laboratory abroad or inbound: visit of the external partner in the home laboratory. The funding line was developed together with Stiftung Charité and the grants are financed by Stiftung Charité. Only fellows of the BIH Charité (Digital) Clinician Scientist Program are eligible to apply. The call for proposals will be published on March 19, 2025, here.
